18. Sukses Tidak Diraih dengan Mudah Louis Bleroit lahir pada tahun 1872 di Prancis. Ia tercatat sebagai orang pertama yang berhasil menyebrangi laut menggunakan pesawat terbang. Sebelum serius melakukan eksperimen pesawat terbang, ia bekerja sebagai pembuat aksesoris mobil. Usaha ini menghasilkan banyak uang. Akan tetapi, semua itu ditinggalkan demi rasa penasarannya pada pesawar terbang. Ia mulai menggeluti bidang pesawat sekitar tahun 1889, dengan membuat model pesawat. Desain sayap pesawat itu mengepak seperti burung dan tidak bermesin. Keberhasilannya ternyata tidak dicapai dengan mudah. Percobaan pertama, misalnya, pesawat karyanya baru mampu terbang selama 20 menit. Itu pun belum bisa dikemudikan. Ia terus berusaha menyempurnakan desain pesawatnya. Pada tahun 1905, Louis Bleriot membuat desain lain. Pesawat ini bentuknya lebih mirip layang-layang raksasa. Supaya bisa terbang, pesawat ini harus ditarik dahulu menggunakan perahu. Pesawat ini memang belum bermesin. Baru pada tahun 1906, ia mencoba memberi mesin pada pesawatnya. Ia kemudian mengganti desain sayap ganda dengan sayap tunggal. Desain yang sampai kini masih dipakai pesawat ringan modern. Percobaan demi percobaan dilakukan. Sampai pada percobaan ketujuh, hasilnya masih belum memuaskan. Baru pada pesawatnya yang kedelapan, percobannya memperlihatkan kemajuan. Pesawat yang dibuatnya pada tahun 1908 itu mampu terbang sejauh 27 km. Pada tahun 1909 surat kabar London Daily Mail mengadakan sayembara. Hadiah 1000 pounds bagi orang pertama yang berhasil melakukan penerbangan melintas Selat Inggris. Tanggal 19 Juli 1909, Hubert Latham, asal Inggris, mencoba tantangan tersebut. Sayang, mesin pesawatnya macet dan ia terjatuh ke laut. Enam hari kemudian, 25 Juli 1909, giliran Louis Bleriot mencoba. Ia menggunakan pesawat kesembilan, ia lepas landas pukul 04.41 waktu setempat dan mendarat di Dover 37 menit kemudian. Louis Bleriot menjadi orang pertama yang terbang melintasi lautan!
